Whittling away at country music’s history by way of the future with razor sharp wit and harmony, San Francisco’s 77 El Deora are just another band like The Blasters, Big Sandy, Willie Heath Neal, and others just too damn good to achieve the level of success they deserve in America. From the brilliantly wicked cowgrrrl retro-graphics of their coveted and oft-stolen show posters to their excellent taste in cover songs (Roy Orbison’s Cryin’ –which sounds to me like the Waylon version- as well as Dallas Wayne’s 3:30 in the Afternoon, not to mention the secret hidden track) 77 El Deora have a wonderful sense of style that’s at once dangerous, classy, and good ol’ countrified fun. The drop-dead gorgeous harmonies of co-lead singers Jenn Courtney and Maurice Tani (the groups songwriter/guitarist and genius behind the graphics) combine with a strong dark wry lyric sense. Backed by Dub Bhajat’s burly yet supple slappin’ bull-fiddle bass, Chris Fisher’s solid generous drumming, and beautifully decorated by Steve Kallai’s fiddle this is a band that recognizes that the song is more important than they are. Oddly I find not a bum track on this disc but there are some real stand outs. In particular is the song This Record Sucks which is a lament of hatin’ that song that was Our Song and the song I would have loved to have heard as the album opener. Also xtra wicked is Fire On The Mountain, which hauls ass, incendiary fiddle, and heavenly harmonies down that flamin’ hillside and would make a magnificent first single. If only. If only Nashville'd pull their fatass accountant ears outta of their pop-filled hineys and give 'em a listen. But I guess that's gonna be your job. Please LiSTEN then spread the word folks! 77 El Deora are back from their first tour on the other side of the big ditch. Here's yr chance to get in on the ground floor of a great new american music band before europe sells 'em back to you.
