Roland Kirk comes to mind. Not to say they sound anything like Kirk. I think in the liner notes on the back of the town hall album w/Mingus, Kirk and another player were talking about their solos, and as I recall, Kirk basically told the other soloist that his own solo was stellar because he was "listenin' his ass". That's what Gorillaz do on this song.
You can almost hear them listenin'.
